Just steps from Piazza Maggiore, hidden in a small alley among the touristy restaurants, you’ll find the historic Osteria del Sole on Vicolo Ranocchi — an almost unnamed wine bar with barely a sign outside. You could easily walk past it if you didn’t know it was there. Inside, it’s all about the atmosphere. Grab any open seat, share tables with locals and fellow travelers, and enjoy the lively communal vibe. No frills, no pretension — just a relaxed old-school wine bar full of character. One of the best parts: you can bring your own food or pick up dishes from nearby restaurants and enjoy them with your wine. The staff is friendly, the pours are generous, and everything is refreshingly affordable. They also serve beer and spritz. Just sit back, mingle with the crowd, practice a little Italian, and enjoy one of Bologna’s simplest and most authentic experiences.

All locals here with their glasses of wines. Drinks were delicious with great variety. We were surprised to see that people are bringing their own food and just ordering the wine. Highly recommended to be prepared before you come here. Get your own snacks or food and enjoy this place.

Was on our list of places to visit and did not disappoint. At all. Quiet late lunch, early afternoon and not too busy. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere with BYO food (we got it from Simoni's deli around the corner) and good local wine selection. Highly recommend and non-touristy.

In a laneway just off the main street of the Quadrilatero is Osteria del Sole, a wine bar that opened in 1465 and which - in the tradition of early wine bars - only serves wine not food. Instead patrons are welcome (even encouraged) to bring their own food. Of an evening, the street is heaving and it's almost impossible to even get to the door. Even during the day the bar is packed - so I suggest arriving as early as possible and for a glass of their house pignoletto at the bar with the locals (leave the tables for the tourists). No need to BYO food, just pop in for a glass and a look around then go elsewhere in the Quadrilatero to eat.

I honestly can’t even put into words how much I love this place. The drinks are always on point! The selection of snacks is insanely good, with so many tasty options that perfectly complement the drinks. What really stood out to me was how friendly and polite the waitstaff were. They spoke English well, which made ordering easy and stress-free, especially for a tourist like me.
